What Is Micromachining?

Micromachining is an advanced, ultra-precision manufacturing process focused on creating extremely small parts, features, and structures with dimensions typically measured in microns (µm) — often ranging from 1 to 500 µm — and with tolerances in the sub-micron to single-digit micron range.

It is not simply "small-scale CNC," but a specialized discipline that pushes the limits of machine tools, cutting tools, and processes to achieve microscopic accuracy.

The Micromachining Characteristics

Scale

Features often smaller than a human hair (~70-100 µm diameter).

Tolerances

± 1 µm or tighter is common.

Tooling

Uses micro-tools (end mills, drills) with diameters as small as 10-20 µm (thinner than paper).

Machine Requirements

Requires ultra-high-precision machines with nanometer-resolution feedback, extreme rigidity, and advanced vibration damping.

Process Focus

Achieves micro-scale geometry directly via material removal (subtractive), unlike semiconductor lithography (pattern-based).

JADE-CNC’s Micro Manufacturing Capabilities

  • Micro Milling
  • Micro EDM
  • Micro CNC Machining
  • 96 Hours Salt Spray
  • Temperature Range: -45°C to +85°C

Micro Milling

Micro Milling uses physically scaled-down, rotating cutting tools (end mills and drills) to mechanically remove material and create extremely small, high-precision features.

JADE-CNC's micro-milling capabilities achieve tolerances as tight as 1 µm. Using cutting-edge equipment, we manufacture intricate micro components vital for high-precision applications. We specialize in producing parts where precision and size are critical, ensuring even the smallest details meet exceptional standards of accuracy and quality.

Key Features

Distinctions VS Conventional Milling

Aspect

Conventional Milling

Micro Milling

Tool Diameter

> 1 mm

< 0.5 mm, down to hair-thin (10-20 µm)

Tolerances

± 0.01 mm (10 µm) or more

± 0.001 mm (1 µm) or better

Machine Rigidity & Spindle

Standard rigidity, RPMs in the 1,000s

Extreme rigidity, ultra-high-speed spindles (40,000 - 150,000+ RPM)

Chip Formation

Continuous or segmented chips

Dust-like, fragmented chips; chip evacuation is a major challenge

Dominant Force

Cutting force

Tool deflection, runout, and vibration become primary limiting factors

Micro EDM

Micro EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) is a specialized, non-contact machining process that uses precisely controlled electrical sparks (discharges) to erode electrically conductive material at a microscopic scale. It can achieve sizes as small as 5µm and tolerances of up to 1µm.

Advantages in Micro EDM

  • Hardness is irrelevant.
  • No Mechanical Stress/Tool Deflection
  • Extreme Aspect Ratios
  • Tolerances within ± 1 µm

Main Types of Micro EDM

Type

Process Description

Primary Applications

Micro Wire EDM

Uses a thin, continuously fed brass or coated wire (as fine as Ф20 μm) as the electrode to cut intricate 2D profiles and shapes through a workpiece.

Micro gears, micro-stents,intricate flat components, cutting extrusion dies.

Micro Drilling EDM (or Hole Popping)

Uses a thin, rotating or stationary tubular or solid electrode to "dril!" micro-holes. The most common type.

Micro holes for fuel injectors, turbine blade cooling holes, spinnerets for fibers, starter holes for wire EDM.

Micro Die-Sinking EDM

Uses a pre-shaped, 3D micro-electrode to create a corresponding cavity or 3D shapein the workpiece. The electrode wears during the process.

Complex micro-cavities in molds, micro-fluidic channels, textured surfaces.

Most common Materials

Tungsten Carbide, Tool Steels, Inconel, Titânio, and specialized alloys.

Typical Applications

Medical

Micro-holes for drug delivery devices, cutting edges for micro-surgical tools, components for minimally invasive devices.

Aerospace

Cooling holes in turbine blades and vanes, micro-features in fuel systems.

Eletrônica

Micro-connectors, parts for micro-sensors, extrusion dies for components.

Tool & Mold Making

Micro-cavities in plastic injection molds, textured surfaces, intricate punch and die sets.

FAQ

No MOQ. We really understand the RD phase specialize in supporting projects from a single prototype through to low-volume production. We understand R&D needs and apply the same rigorous process and quality control, whether for one part or one hundred.

Please provide your 3D model (STEP/IGES preferred) and 2D drawings (with critical dimensions, tolerances, material, and finish specified). We will provide a transparent, detailed quotation based on machining time, material, complexity, and post-processing, with no hidden costs.

For parts of standard complexity, our typical CNC machining lead time is 7-15 working days (from confirmed drawings/payment). We offer expedited service with delivery in 1-3 working days, subject to part evaluation and an additional rush fee.

Our standard machining tolerance is ±0.025 mm (±0.001″). For critical features, we can achieve ±0.005 mm (±0.0002″) or better, depending on part geometry and material. We will perform a DFM analysis and confirm all critical tolerances with you upon receiving your drawings.

Yes, it’s part of our standard process. We perform First Article Inspection (FAI) and can provide inspection reports (e.g., dimensional check sheets, CMM data for critical features) upon request. Our full suite of inspection tools (calipers, micrometers, CMM, etc.) ensures every batch meets your specifications.

We stock various aerospace and commercial-grade metals and plastics, such as Alumínio (6061, 7075), Aço inoxidável (304, 316), Carbon Steel, Latão, ESPIAR, Delrin, etc.. For critical projects, we can provide mill certificates for the raw materials upon request.

Your intellectual property is our top priority. We are glad to sign a legally-binding Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) before any project begins. All digital files are stored on encrypted servers with access strictly limited to the project team.

We are committed to 100% customer satisfaction. If a non-conformance is confirmed to be our manufacturing fault, we will remake or repair the parts at no cost and cover the resulting shipping fees.
